The Film — story synopsis

Imagine the sun as it rises over the placid expanse of water. Peaceful. Tranquil. Like a bit of heaven. Except that this is January. And the water is frozen solid. There is something about a frozen lake in the dead of winter that births a different kind of craziness. Ice racing is one of the craziest. For decades a band of courageous motor-heads have descended on frozen lakes to pit high-powered car against car – and everyone against the cold. "Cracked Ice," tells the story of these hardy racers, their passion, their friendships, and of how this unique culture and crazy sport became the background for transformation in the racing club’s president, Pete Tavernier, from an earlier life of trouble. You will laugh. You will cry. You will be inspired.

The Project — how it came about and where funding came from.

The director/DP, Joel met Pete when Pete repaired his car in the late fall of 2013. A conversation started that day around all the racing gear around the shop. A few months later Joel and Jerry, one the writers, spent a very cold day (45 below) on the ice filming and getting to know the racers. During 2014 race footage and interviews were captured to begin telling the story of ice racing. Beth, the executive producer, suggested we apply for the Minnesota Legacy funds. A contract was awarded to Sam In A Can [Productions] mid January, 2015 through the MNFilmTV Board for the Legacy funding program . Full production was under way for Cracked Ice, the history of ice racing before the end of January 2015.
